A light overshirt in the heat, an inner layer in the cold.
We wanted a shirt that draws on wool’s natural temperature regulation and odor resistance, one you could reach for all year, throughout every season.
But balancing thinness, lightness, and ease of care with wool alone is surprisingly difficult to achieve.

For the Mellow Shirts, wool and polyester are combined within a single yarn, rethinking the construction from the thread up.
The comfort wool is known for, kept intact — alongside a dry, breathable feel and a lightness meant to cross the seasons.

A dry-touch fabric blending wool and polyester

Wool’s temperature regulation and odor resistance. Polyester’s strength, resilience, and ease of care. Blended together, each brings out the best in the other, in careful balance.

Because the two fibers are combined within a single thread, neither characteristic dominates; instead, each quality settles gently across the whole.

Twisting the yarn further preserves the wool’s softness, and the fabric is finished thin, with a dry feel that stays clear of the skin.

The comfort of wool remains — in a lighter fabric, easy to wear all year.

A pattern that balances a shirt-like presence with ease of movement

The front opens fully, making it easy to adjust for temperature and activity level.

A roomy, boxy silhouette, finished with a shirt’s classic rounded hem.

The sleeve head is shaped so that the hem doesn’t easily ride up when you raise your arms.

The body is cut with room to spare, while the collar and cuffs are sized to keep the wind out.

The cuffs can be adjusted in two stages by buttons, making it easy to roll up your sleeves.

Light fabric, tailored with precision

Sewn at one of Japan’s leading shirt factories.

Fine-count thread of the type used in dress shirts, together with a high level of craftsmanship, stitched with care, gives this thin, light fabric the crisp look of a proper shirt.

The main seams are flat-felled. Enclosing the raw edges inside means a clean finish even inside out, with less bulk against the skin.

Fine thread. Careful stitching. Seams finished with attention.

    There’s something about a wool shirt that always feels like classic outdoor gear to me.

    If merino works in the mountains, I figured, why not try an old, slightly coarse wool shirt from the thrift store out there too. So I did.
    It was tough going, honestly. 

    There’s a certain reassurance in something you can treat carelessly.

    But it was hot. Once I started sweating, it felt heavy. And the prickly sensation against my skin was hard to ignore.

    What I actually wanted from a wool shirt on the trail was something lighter, drier.

    There are plenty of wool shirts on the market made with smooth worsted yarn, of course.

    Clean surface, soft against the skin.
    Wool takes a refined look easily, and it suits the idea of a shirt.

    Yet such shirts aren’t necessarily cool to wear.
    Even when they look light, once you put them on, the warmth wins out, and they can feel heavier than expected in hot weather.

    I wanted to keep wool’s temperature regulation, its odor resistance, its resistance to wrinkling.

    At the same time, I wanted a shirt that felt lighter and drier, something I could wear across seasons. 

    So we landed on a fabric that blends wool and polyester within a single thread.

    Wool’s temperature regulation, odor resistance, and wrinkle resistance — joined by polyester’s strength, resilience, and ease of care.

    Rather than one material’s character taking over, each quality settles gently across the whole fabric.

    I like wool shirts.
    But I didn’t want to wear an old-style carded wool shirt straight into the mountains, nor did I want to make a sleek combed wool shirt.

    The Mellow Shirts are, in a way, the wool shirts I have always loved — reimagined to suit how we play now.
